WordPress is an open source, database-driven content management system (CMS) that, once installed, allows you to manage content, pages, media, create menus, etc. Generally, it gives you power to take control of your website without your web developer’s help. If you do not use wordpress platform you would need a developer to do the HTML coding for every change you need to make on your website. This would make running a blog very costly. Instead wordpress with it’s CMS allows anyone to maintain a website, add pages, images and words without any technical knowledge.

What is a theme

A theme controls the look of your wordpress website. It changes the aesthetic look of your website, without changing the core functionality of WordPress that we all love and enjoy. Think of the theme as the component that dresses up and beautifies your site, just as the clothing that is placed on a mannequin to dress it up.

Once you install WordPress, out of the box, doesn’t look ‘pretty.’ The front of your WordPress site, when first installed, is basic, simple, and rather boring. That’s because the theme that comes pre-installed with WordPress is very basic, simple, and boring.  Yes it’s responsive, and yes it does look slicker than most 90s websites. But it’s still pretty plain. That’s the theme of the theme: simple. It’s meant to be uncomplicated.

But that’s not really how we want our site to be, right? We want colors, and cool features, and we want to stand out!

There are two types of theme resources available to find themes, free themes can be found at the wordpress theme directory and paid premium themes can be purchase theme merchants.

Free WordPress themes
The WordPress Theme Directory is the official site for WordPress Themes which have been checked and inspected, and are free for downloading. The site features the ability to search by type and style, and offers a demonstration of the page view elements of the Theme.

Premium WordPress Themes
Simply put a premium WordPress theme costs money. If it isn’t free, it is premium. There are no fixed standards or certification that designates a theme as being premium. Anyone can build a WordPress theme, brand it as premium, and offer it for sale. Themeforest is the largest repository for paid theme of all styles and flavor. Typically speaking a premium theme is usually worth the money since must themes cost less than $70. Check and review theme features before purchasing but if you choose a reputable premium theme shop (which of course you should), you can expect a product that is of superior quality to free themes. There is one problem that will be very discouraging to beginners when purchasing premium themes. The themes are dressup to look incredibly attractive using premium plugins and HTML coding that is not achievable or will the beginner extra fees. The sellers of the premiums themes are not telling a lie but they are stretching the truth.

Your wordpress website must be attractive
If your website is awkward, unprofessional or confusing, that’s the impression people will have of your business.  A professional design gives any website a stronger chance of success.   As with a first impression meeting someone, that impression is lasting and hard to change so why not make it a good lasting impression. Especially when your website is probably one of the easiest things to control.
